Izpisua Belmonte’s early work was pivotal to understand fundamental genetic and cellular principles that govern vertebrate development. His observations have later been key towards elucidating the cellular and molecular basis of tissue/organ regeneration. He has contributed to the regenerative medicine field with key discoveries including: Dedifferentiation and epigenetic modifications that allow for organ regeneration; Novel pluripotent stem cell states that may allow for generation of human organs; Novel drivers and stem cell models of human aging and prevention of mitochondrial diseases. Overall, his scientific interests are in discovering new molecules and specific gene/cell treatments to cure diseases affecting mankind.
